2012 PLAYOFF FORMAT & TIEBREAKER RULES
Playoff Format
The regular season ends after the February 26th games.   Standings at that time will determine the round robin
pool for each team.   Ties in points will be resolved using the tiebreaker rules (below).   Playoffs will run 5 weeks.
The 1st, 4th, 5th and 8th place teams will play in Pool I.   The 2nd, 3rd, 6th and 7th place teams will play in Pool II.
Over the 3-week round robin, each team in Pool I will play every other team in Pool I once.  Likewise for Pool II.
After the 3-week round robin, each team will be re-ranked on points 1st to 4th within their pool.  Ties in points
(for the 3 games only) will be resolved by re-applying the tiebreaker rules.
In week 4 of the playoffs, the semifinals will be played.  The finals are held in Week 5, the last week of the season.
For the A&B semi-finals, the 1st place team in Pool I will play the 2nd place team in Pool II.  Likewise, 1st in Pool II will
play 2nd in Pool I.  The winners of these 2 games will play for the A final, the other 2 teams will play for the B final.
For the C&D semi-finals, the 3rd place team in Pool I will play the 4th place team in Pool II.  Likewise, 3rd in Pool II will
play 4th in Pool I.  The winners of these 2 games will play for the C final, the other 2 teams will play for the D final.
Tiebreaker Rules
These rules are to be used to break ties in the standings based on points - 2 points for a win, 1 point for a tie.
They will be used, if necessary, after the regular season to determine finishing positions from 1st to 8th.
They will be used, if necessary, to break ties within each pool after the 3-game round robin.
Rules are applied in order until ties are broken.  If 3 teams are tied, once the top team is determined using the
rules, the tie between the 2 remaining teams is broken by continuing to apply the rules from the point the 3-way
tie was broken.
Here are the rules, in order:
1.   Most wins among tied teams.
2.   Points in head-to-head competition among tied teams.
3.   Difference between goals for and goals against.  This difference is determined game by game, with a
maximum difference of 7 in any one game.  Differences across all games are then added up.
4.   Least number of goals allowed.
5.   Most points against highest ranked team (in pool for breaking ties in round robin play).
6.   Least penalized team.
7.   Flip of a coin.
In round robin play, if a game is tied after regulation time, a 5-minute sudden death 5-on-5 period will be played
(stopped time).  If no team scores, each team is awarded 1 point.
In semi-finals and finals, if a game is tied after regulation, a 5-minute sudden death 5-on-5 period will be played
(stopped time).  If no team scores, a 5-player shootout will decide the game.  The 5 players need to be named on
the gamesheet before the start of the 5-minute sudden death period.  If still tied after the 5-player shootout,
additional 1-player shootouts will play out until a winner is decided.  A player cannot shoot again until everyone on
the team has shot.
